Single origin from Sri Lanka

Beetroot Powder from Sri Lanka - natural colour, mild flavour.

Beetroot powder is familiar from the smoothie and baking aisle - mostly from European farming. Ours is different: it comes straight from the fields of our partner families in Sri Lanka, making it a true single origin. The root (Beta vulgaris) gives off its colour through the pigment betanin - which makes the powder a natural food colouring, intense pink to dark red. Plus a mild, earthy, slightly sweet flavour.

Origin

Grown by our partner families.

While most beetroot is grown in Europe, ours comes from our partner families' growing area in Sri Lanka. The roots are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness, washed and cut into slices - the first step towards a pure single-origin powder, with no mixing with produce of other origin.

Harvest & processing

Sliced, dried, finely ground.

The slices are gently dried and then mechanically ground into a fine powder - right in the country of origin. No additives, no flavourings, no artificial colours. The intense pink to dark red colour comes solely from the betanin in the root.

The powder

Finely ground, intensely colouring.

Beetroot Powder

Mild and earthy, slightly sweet and ready to use straight away - no peeling, no pre-cooking as with the fresh root. The pigment betanin colours an intense pink to dark red.

How to use

Versatile in the kitchen.

Two strengths make the powder flexible - colouring power and mild taste: 1 tsp in a smoothie for a bright pink, 1 tbsp in hummus, 1-2 tbsp in the dough for pink pancakes, cakes or biscuits without any food colouring, or in pasta dough for naturally pink pasta. Tip: betanin colours strongly - better to start sparingly.

Everything starts in the field. Our smallholder families in Jaffna, the central region and the classic Ceylon growing areas harvest their spices by hand - exactly when the aroma is at its most concentrated. We are on site regularly, know the hands behind every harvest and pay fair prices directly to the families through local partner cooperatives.

Directly after the harvest, the spices are gently dried and taken to our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. There they are cleaned, ground and filled into finished packaging - all still in Sri Lanka. We import only sealed finished products to Darmstadt. Here we store, pick and ship to you the same day.
