All MrCOLOMBO spices come directly from Sri Lanka - from three growing regions: Jaffna in the north (turmeric, moringa, chili, lemongrass), the central region (black pepper) and the classic Ceylon growing areas (Ceylon cinnamon). We work with our partner families, organised through local cooperatives - directly and transparently, without anonymous middlemen.

Product & Quality
We buy our spices directly from the smallholder families of Sri Lanka, organised through local partner cooperatives. Packing takes place in the country of origin - not in Europe. Packing at origin keeps the value where the spices grow and makes for a shorter, transparent supply chain. Instead of anonymous industrial goods, at MrCOLOMBO you get single-origin spices with a clear origin.
At MrCOLOMBO, single origin means: the spice comes from one clearly named growing region of Sri Lanka and is not blended with other origins. Processing takes place in an FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility in Sri Lanka. We only state specific analysis or batch evidence per product when it is available.
Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) originally comes from Sri Lanka and tastes fine and mild. Cassia cinnamon belongs to other Cinnamomum species and typically contains more coumarin. We only state specific measured values or analyses per batch when suitable evidence is available.
Whole: whole peppercorns, best keeping quality and intense aroma when freshly ground. Cracked: coarsely broken, with bite - ideal for steaks, marinades and rubs. Powder: finely ground, ready to dose - for soups, sauces and blends. All three from the same batch from the central region of Sri Lanka.
Yes. Grinding takes place directly in Sri Lanka at our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. Product-specific processing details can be found on the respective product pages.
Four MrCOLOMBO classics carry the EU organic seal under DE-ÖKO-005: organic turmeric powder, organic moringa powder, organic lemongrass cut and organic lemongrass powder. Our single-origin varieties are not EU organic certified, but come from traditional cultivation in Sri Lanka and are processed without added flavourings and without additives.
Packing at origin takes place in an FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility in Sri Lanka. The organic classics are additionally inspected by DE-ÖKO-005 under EU Organic Regulation 2018/848. We only communicate product- and batch-related evidence when it is available for the goods in question.
Our spices are processed without added flavourings, anti-caking agents, sugar or salt. We do not promise blanket freedom from residues. The four EU organic certified classics are additionally subject to the controlled requirements of the EU Organic Regulation.
In paper bags with an aroma-protecting inner liner, sealed and labelled directly in Sri Lanka. The paper outer layer is recyclable; the inner liner protects essential oils and freshness throughout the shelf life. Transport by cargo ship (CO2-efficient compared with air freight), stored dry and cool in Darmstadt. Shipped on business days within 24 h of ordering.
You will find the best-before date on every pack. We recommend cool, dry storage protected from light. After opening, the aroma unfolds best if the spice is used within a few months.
Three rules: dry, cool, protected from light. Our resealable bags in a kitchen cupboard away from the stove are ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, high humidity and temperature fluctuations. Do not take powdered spices directly over the steaming pot - the steam reduces shelf life.
We are launching step by step over the coming weeks. On the page /pages/neue-produkte-im-sortiment you can see all eleven new varieties as a preview teaser. Sign up for the newsletter there - you will be the first to know as soon as a variety is available.
Nine of the eleven new varieties are released with the EU organic seal (DE-ÖKO-005): curry leaves, golden milk, cardamom pods, nutmeg whole and powder, cloves as well as white pepper in all three variations. Fennel and coriander come as single origin without organic certification. This significantly expands the organic range.
Grinding, filling and labelling take place directly in Sri Lanka - in our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. That keeps the value in the country of origin and the supply chain short. We import sealed, ready-to-ship finished products in paper bags with an aroma-protecting inner liner. In Darmstadt only storage and shipping remain.

On our origin page we present the regions and the model in more detail.

Per product
Organic turmeric powder is finely ground powder from the turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa), grown on EU organic certified fields of our partner families in Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka. Certified under EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 by DE-ÖKO-005. You will find more questions about organic turmeric powder on the product page.
An independent, EU-accredited organic control body inspects cultivation and processing annually under EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 from the field to final packaging. Our control body number is visible on every pack: DE-ÖKO-005. More on the product page.
For a cup of golden milk, 1 teaspoon is enough; for a curry for 4 people, about 2 teaspoons. Smoothies need ½ teaspoon. Tip: traditionally, turmeric is briefly fried in hot oil for curries - this releases the fat-soluble aromas. More recipes and tips on the product page.
Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a tropical deciduous tree whose leaves have been used in South Asian cuisine for centuries. Our powder comes from certified EU organic fields of our partner families in Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka. More on the product page.
Direct sunlight reduces the chlorophyll and the mild aroma of the moringa leaves. Shade drying below 40 °C preserves the intense green colour and the characteristic taste - exactly as it is traditionally done in Sri Lanka. More on the product page.
To start, ½ to 1 teaspoon per day. Tip: do not heat moringa above 60 °C - best stirred into warm drinks or sprinkled over finished dishes. More recipes and tips on the product page.
Powder is ready to use - no cutting, no hard fibre residue. Cut lemongrass is better suited to tea or soups where it is strained out before serving. Our powder comes single origin from Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka. More on the product page.
Classic uses: Asian soups (tom kha, pho), curry pastes, marinades for fish and chicken, lemongrass tea, smoothies, dressings. Also in baked goods such as shortbread and jam. Tip: sweat briefly in hot oil for more aroma. More on the product page.
In normal culinary quantities, lemongrass is considered safe. With regular consumption of larger quantities (e.g. several cups of lemongrass tea daily), pregnant or breastfeeding women or people on long-term medication should discuss consumption with their doctor. More on the product page.
Ideal for lemongrass tea, clear Asian soups (pho, tom yum), herbal infusions and flavoured oils - all uses where the lemongrass is strained out before serving. For curry pastes and marinades, our powder variant is better. More on the product page.
For one cup (250 ml), 1 tsp is enough. Steep for 5-7 minutes in water at 90 °C, then strain. For clear Asian soups, 1-2 tsp per litre of stock. Better to start with a modest amount. More on the product page.
The dried stalks are very fibrous and are traditionally strained out before eating. If you want to leave lemongrass in the dish, our finely ground organic lemongrass powder is the better choice. More on the product page.
