Description

Beetroot Powder from Sri Lanka - finely ground powder from the beetroot bulb (Beta vulgaris), with an intense pink to dark red colour and a mild, earthy, slightly sweet taste. Unlike most European suppliers, we source our beetroot directly from our partner families in Sri Lanka - gently dried and mechanically ground on site. That makes our powder a single-origin alternative straight from the growing region in Sri Lanka.

Flavour profile & taste

Mild and earthy with a slightly sweet note and a pleasant, almost nutty depth. The intense pink to deep red colour is the hallmark of beetroot powder - it is suitable not only as an ingredient but also as a natural colouring for pasta, juices, baked goods and hummus. In terms of taste it is noticeably milder than raw beetroot, without the typical earthy barnyard smell.

Origin

Our beetroot comes from the growing area of our partner families in Sri Lanka. The roots are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, washed, cut into slices and gently dried - then mechanically ground into a fine powder.

Use

Beetroot powder has two great strengths: intense colouring power and a mild flavour. Together they make it versatile:

  • Smoothies & juices: 1 tsp in 300 ml of smoothie with apple, banana and ginger - a bright pink shade
  • Hummus & dips: 1 tbsp in classic hummus for pink hummus - tastes mild and earthy
  • Baked goods: 1-2 tbsp in the batter for pink pancakes, pink cakes or red biscuits without food colouring
  • Pasta & gnocchi: 1 tbsp in the dough for naturally pink pasta or pink ravioli
  • Dressings & sauces: ½ tsp in yoghurt dressing for a touch of pink

Dosage: ½ to 1 tsp for one portion of smoothie. For baked goods, 1-2 tbsp per 500 g of flour. When colouring, start with a small amount and add more as desired - even small amounts colour strongly.

Tip from the kitchen: beetroot powder is ready to use straight away - no peeling, no pre-cooking as with fresh beetroot. For intense colour, briefly soak the powder in lukewarm water, then fold it in.

Note: because of the natural nitrate content of beetroot, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, BfR) recommends not feeding beetroot products to infants in their first year of life. Adults can consume beetroot powder in normal food quantities without concern.

Quality
  • 100% pure beetroot - no additives, no flavourings, no colourings (apart from the natural colour of the root itself)
  • Single-origin from Sri Lanka - straight from our partner families, no mixed goods from anonymous wholesale
  • Hand-harvested and packed as a single variety in Sri Lanka - no mixing with goods of other origins
  • Intense natural colouring effect - the perfect food colouring for dough, hummus and smoothies
  • Ready to use - no peeling, no pre-cooking as with fresh beetroot

Pink hummus with beetroot powder

Serves 4, preparation time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of chickpeas (240 g drained)
  • 1 tbsp Beetroot Powder
  • 2 tbsp tahini (sesame paste)
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp water
  • Salt, pepper and cumin to taste

Method

  1. Drain the chickpeas and rinse briefly with cold water
  2. Put all the ingredients in a blender or food processor
  3. Blend for 2-3 minutes until creamy, adding a little water as needed
  4. Season with salt, pepper and a pinch of cumin
  5. Transfer to a bowl, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds

Note: The beetroot powder gives the hummus its typical pink colour and a light earthy note that goes well with tahini and lemon.
