Description

Turmeric Powder from Sri Lanka - finely ground turmeric root (Curcuma longa) from northern Sri Lanka, with an intense yellow-orange colour and a milder taste than roasted curry turmeric. Unlike our EU organic counterpart, this variety is just as single-origin from the traditional growing areas of our partner families in Jaffna. Perfect for all applications in which the intense yellow colour and the earthy, fresh taste take centre stage, without organic certification being strictly necessary.

Flavour profile & taste

Mild and earthy with warm, spicy, slightly bitter notes and a subtly sweet, peppery depth. Turmeric from Jaffna is noticeably more aromatic than industrial imports from India - the slow ripening in a tropical climate and the gentle drying preserve the essential oils. The intense yellow-orange colour is the hallmark of high-quality turmeric.

Origin

Our turmeric comes from Jaffna, the northernmost district of Sri Lanka. Here, the turmeric root (Curcuma longa) grows in the fields of our partner families in a tropical climate. The farmers harvest the rhizomes by hand at optimum ripeness, wash them thoroughly, boil them briefly, dry them gently and then mechanically grind them into a fine powder.

Use

Turmeric powder is one of the most versatile spice ingredients in the world - here are the most important uses:

  • Classic curry: 1-2 tsp in chicken, lentil or vegetable curry for the typical yellow-orange colour
  • Golden milk (turmeric latte): 1 tsp with warm milk, ginger, honey and a pinch of black pepper
  • Rice dishes: ½ tsp in the rice water for golden-yellow rice - a classic with curry dishes
  • Smoothies: ½ tsp in smoothie bowls with banana, ginger and mango - a sunny yellow shade
  • Dressings & marinades: ¼ tsp in salad dressings or marinades for chicken, tofu and vegetables

Dosage: ½-1 tsp per portion. Turmeric colours intensely - better to start with a measured amount and season further to taste. Caution: turmeric stains hands, wooden boards and textiles heavily - if in doubt, work with gloves.

Tip from Sri Lankan cooking: always briefly sweat turmeric in oil before adding the other ingredients - this releases the fat-soluble flavour compounds. A pinch of black pepper traditionally rounds off the flavour profile.

Quality
  • 100% Sri Lanka turmeric (Curcuma longa) - single-origin from Jaffna

  • Gentle mechanical milling - no heat applied, essential oils are retained

  • Straight from our smallholder families in Jaffna - no anonymous wholesale
Ingredients & nutrition

Origin: Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

Allergens: none.

Recipes

Classic golden milk (turmeric latte)

Makes 2 cups, preparation time: 8 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 ml plant-based drink (oat, almond or coconut)
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder from Sri Lanka
  • 1 cm fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 pinch of cinnamon

Method

  1. Pour the plant-based drink into a small saucepan and stir in the turmeric, ginger, pepper and cinnamon
  2. Warm over a medium heat, stirring - do not boil!
  3. Leave to infuse for 2 minutes, then strain through a sieve into cups
  4. Sweeten with honey and dust with cocoa if you like

Note: The pinch of black pepper is a traditional part of Sri Lankan golden milk - black pepper harmoniously complements the flavour profile of turmeric.
