Description

Organic Turmeric Powder from Sri Lanka - bright sunny yellow, finely ground, EU organic certified under DE-ÖKO-005. Our smallholder partner families from Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka grow the organic turmeric on certified organic fields - mineral-rich soils and a consistent dry season give the root its intense colour and its characteristic aroma. Processing and final packaging take place entirely on site in Sri Lanka. We import exclusively sealed end products to Darmstadt - no intermediaries, no mixing with goods of other origin.

Flavour profile & taste

Earthy and warm with a slight bitter note and a subtly peppery, resinous aftertaste. Organic turmeric from Jaffna is noticeably more aromatic than industrially processed imports - the drying process under the tropical sun and the mechanical grinding without added heat preserve the essential oils. In the mouth the spiciness develops slowly and lingers for a long time.

Origin

Our organic turmeric comes from Jaffna, the northernmost district of Sri Lanka. Here the turmeric rhizomes grow on EU-certified organic fields of our partner families - traditionally and without synthetic pesticides, on pure turmeric fields. The farmers harvest the rhizomes by hand after the rainy season, wash them and dry them gently on wooden trays. Mechanical grinding and sealed final packaging also take place in Sri Lanka.

Use

Organic Turmeric Powder is versatile - both in traditional Sri Lankan cooking as a curry base and in modern wellness cooking:

  • Golden milk: 1 tsp organic turmeric frothed in 250 ml milk (or plant-based drink), seasoned with a pinch of black pepper and honey
  • Sri Lankan curry: 1-2 tsp turmeric form the yellow base for chicken, vegetable or lentil curry
  • Rice & lentils: ½ tsp while cooking for golden-yellow rice
  • Smoothies: with ginger and lemon as a flavour combination
  • Marinades: with lemon juice and yoghurt for chicken, tofu or cauliflower

Tip from traditional cooking: In Sri Lankan curries, turmeric is typically fried briefly in hot oil - this releases the fat-soluble aromas better. A pinch of black pepper is part of the classic spice combination.

Quality
  • EU organic under DE-ÖKO-005 - annual audit under EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 from field to final packaging
  • Hand-harvested and packed as a single variety in Sri Lanka - no mixing with goods of other origins
  • Straight from our smallholder families in Jaffna - no anonymous wholesale, no middlemen
  • Sealed finished products from the country of origin - packed in Sri Lanka, only stored and dispatched in Darmstadt
  • Family business with Sri Lankan roots - personal checks by our partner families on site
