Description

Organic Lemongrass Cuts from Sri Lanka - dried lemongrass stalks (Cymbopogon citratus) in coarse pieces, EU organic certified under DE-ÖKO-005. Our smallholder partner families from Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka cultivate the lemongrass in a tropical climate on certified organic fields. Unlike ground powder, the cut variety is particularly suitable for tea, clear soups and infusions - the stalks release their aroma slowly and are strained out before serving. Single-origin from ONE defined district - no blended goods from Egypt or non-EU agriculture.

Flavour profile & taste

Clear, lemony and fresh with a floral note and a subtle sweet, grassy depth. Organic lemongrass cuts from Jaffna release their aroma slowly in hot water - perfect for teas in which the stalks steep for 5-7 minutes. The intense freshness is preserved by the gentle drying, without the bitter compounds found in lemongrass that has been dried at too high a temperature.

Origin

Our organic lemongrass comes from Jaffna, the northernmost district of Sri Lanka. Here, lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) grows on the EU-organic-certified fields of our partner families - without synthetic pesticides, in pure fields alongside other aromatic plants such as curry leaves and ginger. The farmers cut the stalks by hand at optimum ripeness, sort them, dry them gently (without heat) and then cut them into even pieces.

Use

Organic cut lemongrass is the ideal form for all uses where the lemongrass is strained out again before eating:

  • Lemongrass tea: pour 90 °C hot water over 1 tsp per cup, leave to steep for 5-7 min, strain, and flavour with honey and lemon
  • Clear Asian soups: simmer 1-2 tsp in pho or tom yum, fish out before serving
  • Herbal stock for flavouring: with ginger and lime leaves as a base for curry broths
  • Infusions for seasoning: leave to infuse in hot oil, then strain - use the flavoured oil for marinades
  • Iced tea & lemonade: brew hot tea, strain, serve cold with lime and honey

Dosage: For a cup of tea (250 ml), 1 tsp of cut lemongrass is enough. For clear soups, 1-2 tsp per litre of broth. Better to start with a measured amount and adjust to taste.

Tip from traditional cooking: If you use the stalks as whole pieces, press or cut them lightly - this releases the essential oils better. Unlike the powder, cut lemongrass does not stay in the dish and releases its aroma slowly into the liquid.

Note: Pregnant and breastfeeding women should discuss the regular consumption of larger amounts of lemongrass (e.g. several cups of tea daily) with their doctor before consuming it. Smaller amounts in food are considered safe.

Quality
  • EU organic under DE-ÖKO-005 - annual audit under EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 from the field to the final packaging
  • gentle drying - gentle, preserves the fresh lemon aroma without bitter notes
  • Hand-harvested and packed single-variety in Sri Lanka - no mixing with produce of other origin
  • Directly from our smallholder families in Jaffna - no anonymous wholesale, no middlemen
  • Ideal for tea and clear soups - the cut form releases its aroma slowly and is easy to strain out before serving
