Single origin from Jaffna

Turmeric Powder from Sri Lanka - single origin from Jaffna.

Turmeric is more than colour in a curry. The root (Curcuma longa) owes its bright yellow-orange hue to curcumin, its natural pigment - and how intense the colour and aroma turn out is decided as early as ripening, harvest and drying. Most turmeric on the market comes from large-scale farming in India. Ours grows exclusively in Jaffna, the tropical north of Sri Lanka, on the fields of our smallholder families - single origin, single-variety, with an earthy, fresh, mild flavour. Available conventional or EU organic under DE-ÖKO-005.

Origin

Jaffna, the far north of Sri Lanka.

Jaffna lies at the northern tip of Sri Lanka - tropically warm and farmed by hand on small plots. We buy directly from the families who grow the turmeric root here, and we know the fields it comes from. It is harvested only at full ripeness and washed while still on the field - every batch stays single-variety with its family, with no middlemen and no mixing with produce of other origins.

Harvest & processing

Why turmeric is boiled first, then ground.

Before drying, the rhizomes are briefly boiled. They are then dried and mechanically ground into a fine powder.

Use

From curry to golden milk.

Turmeric colours and seasons at the same time. 1-2 tsp give chicken, lentil or vegetable curries their typical golden colour and earthy depth. For golden milk (turmeric latte), stir 1 tsp into warm milk with ginger, honey and a pinch of black pepper. And ½ tsp in the cooking water turns rice sunny yellow. A tip: turmeric stains strongly - use sparingly and wipe down worktops promptly.

Everything starts in the field. Our smallholder families in Jaffna, the central region and the classic Ceylon growing areas harvest their spices by hand - exactly when the aroma is at its most concentrated. We are on site regularly, know the hands behind every harvest and pay fair prices directly to the families through local partner cooperatives.

Directly after the harvest, the spices are gently dried and taken to our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. There they are cleaned, ground and filled into finished packaging - all still in Sri Lanka. We import only sealed finished products to Darmstadt. Here we store, pick and ship to you the same day.
