Single origin from the highlands of Sri Lanka
Black pepper - true, single-variety, in three forms.
Black pepper is one of the most widely used spices in the world - yet origin, cultivation and processing decide the difference between lively seasoning and flat heat. Our Piper nigrum comes exclusively from a single growing region in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, is harvested and processed by smallholder families - and reaches you directly as whole peppercorns, coarse cracked pepper or fine powder.
Origin
Highland origin: Matale, Kandy, Kegalle.
The districts of Matale, Kandy and Kegalle lie between 600 and 1,200 metres above sea level in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. In these cooler locations, Piper nigrum ripens considerably more slowly than in tropical lowlands. No mixing with pepper from Brazil, India or Vietnam.

Harvest & processing
From green berry to black peppercorn.
Black pepper is made from unripe green berries. Our partner families harvest by hand as soon as the berries have reached their optimum ripeness. They are then gently dried - the skin contracts, wrinkles and turns dark. The powder is ground in Jaffna, also in Sri Lanka.

The three forms
Whole, cracked or ground.

Whole Peppercorns
For the mill and mortar - the aroma is preserved until freshly ground. 5-10 peppercorns per portion, simmer in broths and strain out, ideal for pickling.

Cracked Pepper
Medium-coarse and ready to use straight away - no mill needed. Adds texture and visible seasoning: pepper crust on steaks, marinades, savoury pancakes.

Ground Pepper
Very finely ground for even seasoning without bits. Blends homogeneously into sauces, soups, dips and baked goods - perfect for rubs.
Use
Which form suits your kitchen?
Whole peppercorns for everything you grind fresh or cook in. Cracked for texture and visible seasoning. Powder for even incorporation. If you rarely use pepper, whole peppercorns are your best bet - they keep their aroma the longest. All three forms are based on the same highland peppercorns from Sri Lanka - you simply choose the degree of processing.

Everything starts in the field. Our smallholder families in Jaffna, the central region and the classic Ceylon growing areas harvest their spices by hand - exactly when the aroma is at its most concentrated. We are on site regularly, know the hands behind every harvest and pay fair prices directly to the families through local partner cooperatives.
Directly after the harvest, the spices are gently dried and taken to our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. There they are cleaned, ground and filled into finished packaging - all still in Sri Lanka. We import only sealed finished products to Darmstadt. Here we store, pick and ship to you the same day.

Currently four classics carry the EU organic seal - inspected by Ecocert Deutschland GmbH (DE-ÖKO-005): organic turmeric powder, organic moringa powder, organic lemongrass cut and organic lemongrass powder. Single-origin varieties without the organic label also meet our quality standard: single-variety by growing region, FSSC 22000-certified packing at origin.
Gently and without chemicals: drying is done the classic way in the sun in Sri Lanka, grinding is purely mechanical - so essential oils and the natural aroma are preserved.
The best-before date is on the back of every bag. Stored cool, dry and protected from light, the spices keep their aroma best - ideally tightly closed.
Entirely in Sri Lanka - directly at origin in paper bags with an aroma-protecting inner liner. In Germany only storage in Darmstadt and shipping take place. This short value chain is the core of our direct-trade model.
