Single origin from Jaffna

Lemongrass from Sri Lanka - powder and cuts, EU organic.

Fresh lemongrass is wonderfully aromatic - but fibrous, hard to measure out and rarely available in organic quality. Our Cymbopogon citratus grows EU organic certified on the fields of our smallholder families in Jaffna, between curry leaves and ginger. We dry the stalks gently and offer them in two forms: finely ground as powder - ready to measure out, with no fibre residue - or coarsely cut for tea and infusions. Both single origin, both certified under DE-ÖKO-005.

Origin

Between curry leaves and ginger.

In Jaffna, the northernmost district of Sri Lanka, our lemongrass grows on the EU-organic-certified fields of our partner families, alongside other aromatic plants such as curry leaves and ginger. The stalks are cut by hand at optimum ripeness and stay single-variety with the family that grew them.

Harvest & processing

Gently dried, then ground or cut.

After cutting, the stalks are dried. They are then either mechanically ground into a fine powder or coarsely cut into pieces. Two forms, one origin - both EU organic under DE-ÖKO-005.

Finely ground and ready to measure out - no cutting, no tough fibre residue. Ideal for curries, marinades and Asian soups.

Dried stalks in coarse pieces - perfect for lemongrass tea and infusions, which you simply remove after steeping.

Use

From tea to Asian soup.

For lemongrass tea, pour water heated to 90 °C over ½ tsp of powder or 1 tsp of cuts per cup, leave to steep for 5 minutes, optionally with honey and ginger. The powder seasons curries, marinades and Asian soups such as pho directly; the cut form releases its aroma into broths and infusions and is removed afterwards.

Everything starts in the field. Our smallholder families in Jaffna, the central region and the classic Ceylon growing areas harvest their spices by hand - exactly when the aroma is at its most concentrated. We are on site regularly, know the hands behind every harvest and pay fair prices directly to the families through local partner cooperatives.

Directly after the harvest, the spices are gently dried and taken to our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. There they are cleaned, ground and filled into finished packaging - all still in Sri Lanka. We import only sealed finished products to Darmstadt. Here we store, pick and ship to you the same day.
