Description

Organic Lemongrass Powder from Sri Lanka - finely ground powder from the stalks of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), EU organic certified under DE-ÖKO-005. Our smallholder partner families from Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka grow the lemongrass in a tropical climate on certified organic fields - mineral-rich soils and constant sunshine ensure particularly pronounced essential oils. Gentle drying and mechanical grinding at the place of origin preserve freshness and aroma. Unlike European imports or blended goods from non-EU agriculture, our lemongrass comes single-origin from ONE defined district.

Flavour profile & taste

Intensely fresh, lemony and zesty with a slightly sweet, almost mint-like note. Organic lemongrass powder from Jaffna is noticeably more aromatic than European blended goods - the tropical sun and the mineral-rich soils give the stalk its characteristic spice. Just a small pinch is enough to lend dishes or tea an unmistakable Sri Lankan aroma.

Origin

Our organic lemongrass comes from Jaffna, the northernmost district of Sri Lanka. Here, lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) grows on the EU-organic-certified fields of our partner families - without synthetic pesticides, in pure fields alongside other aromatic plants such as curry leaves and ginger. The farmers cut the stalks by hand at optimum ripeness, sort them, dry them gently and then mechanically grind them into a fine powder. Final packaging in sealed packs.

Use

Organic lemongrass powder can be used in many ways - more practical than fresh, because it can be dosed straight away without chopping and without tough fibrous residue:

  • Lemongrass tea: pour 90 °C hot water over ½ tsp per cup, leave to steep for 5 min, optionally with honey and ginger
  • Asian soups: 1 tsp in pho, tom kha gai or Thai curries - brings the typical freshness
  • Marinades: for chicken, fish or prawns with garlic, ginger, lime and soy sauce
  • Curry pastes: with galangal, garlic, chilli and coriander for home-made Sri Lankan or Thai pastes
  • Smoothies & iced tea: ¼ tsp with lime, mint and honey - refreshing and summery

Dosage: for a cup of tea (250 ml), ½ tsp is enough; for curry or soup, 1 tsp per portion. Powder is more intense than fresh lemongrass - better to start with a measured amount and adjust to taste.

Tip from traditional cooking: for maximum aroma, briefly sweat the powder in hot oil or butter before adding the other ingredients. This releases the essential oils particularly well.

Note: pregnant and breastfeeding women should discuss the regular consumption of larger quantities of lemongrass with their doctor before consuming it. Smaller amounts in food are considered harmless.

Quality
  • EU organic under DE-ÖKO-005 - annual audit under EU Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 from field to final packaging
  • Gentle milling without heat - mechanically milled to a fine powder, essential oils are retained
  • Hand-harvested and packed as a single variety in Sri Lanka - no mixing with goods of other origins
  • Straight from our smallholder families in Jaffna - no anonymous wholesale, no middlemen
  • Ready to use - no chopping, no sorting out tough stalks as with fresh lemongrass
