Single origin from Sri Lanka
Chilli from Sri Lanka - roasted, unroasted or as flakes.
Not all chilli is the same. Our chilli (Capsicum annuum) grows with our smallholder families in Sri Lanka, stays single-variety and comes to you straight from the farm. The special part comes after the harvest: we roast a portion traditionally in the pan over an open fire - this gives a nutty, smoky depth that raw chilli lacks. So you get roasted powder, unroasted powder or flakes, all from one origin.
Origin
Harvested by hand, at full ripeness.
In the tropical climate of Sri Lanka, our partner families grow the chilli plants by hand. Harvesting begins only once the fruits have ripened to a deep red; they are then gently dried on wooden trays - the classic way, without industrial hot air. Every batch stays single-variety with the family that grew it.

Harvest & processing
Pan-roasted over an open fire.
After drying comes the step that defines Sri Lankan cuisine: the fruits are roasted in shallow pans over an open fire until they are deep dark red to brown - a technique that has been passed down here for generations. Roasting before grinding develops nutty, smoky aromas that unroasted chilli lacks. If you want the fruity, fresh note, choose the unroasted variety.

The three forms
Roasted, unroasted or as flakes.

Roasted
Roasted in the pan over an open fire - dark red powder with nutty, smoky depth, the classic of Sri Lankan cuisine.

Unroasted
Ground raw, without roasting - light red powder with a fruity, fresh note and direct heat.

Flakes
Without stems and low in seeds - visible chilli pieces that release their heat gradually. Ideal for pizza, pasta and the wok.
Use
Which form suits your kitchen?
Roasted powder for curries, sambols and anything with a roasted aroma. Unroasted for direct, fruity heat in marinades, sauces and dips. Flakes for visible seasoning on pizza, pasta and in the wok. All three from the same single-origin cultivation in Sri Lanka.

Everything starts in the field. Our smallholder families in Jaffna, the central region and the classic Ceylon growing areas harvest their spices by hand - exactly when the aroma is at its most concentrated. We are on site regularly, know the hands behind every harvest and pay fair prices directly to the families through local partner cooperatives.
Directly after the harvest, the spices are gently dried and taken to our FSSC 22000-certified packing partner facility. There they are cleaned, ground and filled into finished packaging - all still in Sri Lanka. We import only sealed finished products to Darmstadt. Here we store, pick and ship to you the same day.

Currently four classics carry the EU organic seal - inspected by Ecocert Deutschland GmbH (DE-ÖKO-005): organic turmeric powder, organic moringa powder, organic lemongrass cut and organic lemongrass powder. Single-origin varieties without the organic label also meet our quality standard: single-variety by growing region, FSSC 22000-certified packing at origin.
Gently and without chemicals: drying is done the classic way in the sun in Sri Lanka, grinding is purely mechanical - so essential oils and the natural aroma are preserved.
The best-before date is on the back of every bag. Stored cool, dry and protected from light, the spices keep their aroma best - ideally tightly closed.
Entirely in Sri Lanka - directly at origin in paper bags with an aroma-protecting inner liner. In Germany only storage in Darmstadt and shipping take place. This short value chain is the core of our direct-trade model.
